Mystical Conquests (Retro 4X Civ, MoM, AoW, HoMM like game)

Have found a interesting up & coming 2024 retro fantasy turn-based 4X strategy indie game called Mystical Conquests that has a very classic Master of Magic like feel plus a bit of Heroes of Might & Magic thrown in too, however the author actually lists Civilization, Age of Wonders and Final Fantasy Tactics as it’s main inspirations. Naturally the game contains all the usual 4X fantasy strategy genre hallmarks of exploring a world map filled with lairs & treasures, building & developing cities, researching new technologies, fighting battles with heroes & armies of creatures, item crafting and spell casting too. The 8bit style graphics and sound give a very nice retro feeling, and the system requirements are accordingly low. If you feel curious about testing & giving the developer some feedback, there is a playable demo available on Steam.

Blake’s Sanctum 2022 End of Year Report, News & Thankyous!

Hey guys! đŸ™‚ Well another year has gone by and once again it’s wasn’t a particularly great one for me health wise, but hey I’m still going (reasonably) strong and am looking forward to travelling again soon (on a fun holiday for a mates wedding where I’m on best man duties!) as it’s been a few years! So as usual this is the time of the year that I look back on the year, check out all the stats and report on how things have been going for Blake’s Sanctum and talk about what’s to come!

In last years round up I commented that Blake’s Sanctum website traffic had dropped from the usual 10,000+ a year visitors however it turned out that once again the old counter site I was using was not working properly and was being blocked by most browsers due to being classic http and not https SSL certified. Then the whole counter site died completely! So in actual fact I probably did have the usual amount of visitors in 2021 but just couldn’t see them due to these issues. So in 2022 I got another counter, then that died, then another counter that seems to only work sometimes, plus I had issues with people going to the old http version of my site and not getting redirected to the certified https version (which I’ve just fixed) and the counter only worked on one and not the other, so I’ve had no friggin luck with this lol. It’s currently sitting on 77,747 so it’s safe to say I DID actually hit the big 70,000 mark this time last year and I’m probably actually around the 80,000 mark now if not more! I should look into counters I can host myself as all the free ones out there hosted elsewhere are useless these days!

My wordpress blog here has suffered a legit drop in hits though as last year I was closing in on 45,000 continuing the blogs usual form of around 10k hits a year too however right now it’s on just over 51,000 hits so only just over 5k this year. I’ve been posting more news than previous years so reasons could be lack of work on my main website and some of my most popular posts (eg the 2017 Star Trek Birth of The Federation 2 projects post) becoming old and moving down the ranking in google searches. This years top post appears to be my Walking Dead Webisodes post where I try to keep track of where people can watch all these not so well known extra side stories from the WD universe.

All my blog news posts are copied over to my Patreon page too which would increase my news hit totals however Patreon don’t give seem to give total annual views stats so who knows how many visitors I’ve had there lol. However I’m very pleased that my first (& probably last lol) Patreon Jack is still with me after a year, thank you sir! I believe Jack originally decided to support me because of my lost Civilization 2 scenario preservation work which had some brilliant successes this year with donors giving me some huge collections to add to the repository resulting in literally thousands of lost fan creations and some truly awesome scenarios I’d been looking for being found and saved!

Once the Civ2 MGE preservation work was completed (at least until the next scenario collection donation comes) mid year, I then set about getting back to work on my huuuuge Civilization 2 tour video I’ve been working on for years (which the scenario preservation work all feeds into) and then also finally got back to working on finishing all my own Civ2 scenario mod projects. I’m pleased to say that as soon as I’m back from my holiday I’ll be able to start releasing all my Civ2 mods and videos meaning 2023 will finally be the year where I finish up most of my Civ2 work and can move on to Test of Time and do a bit of preservation work along with releasing a couple of scenarios I’ve made for that too. This is a big step in me moving on in the Civilization series and wrapping up all the videos and the big Civilization series section website work, finally freeing me up to play more other games and work on other new sections of the site as well as updating old sections (I keep word docs with all the new fan projects I find & the lists are getting massive!).

Speaking of me working on the website I just wanted to say I haven’t totally neglected it over the past few years lol! As previous posted I decided to start paying for a website host giving me the space I needed to solve all my image hosting issues. I then painstakingly fixed broken image links across the site replacing all the old dead Photobucket links with new locally hosted ones (although I’ve still gotta replace some of my newer Imgur ones but at least they still work for now so replacing them is not urgent). I also did a bit of work to update the old WIP Final Fantasy Series tribute page making it more accessible and ‘ready’ for adding game tributes to, I also then used it as a template to create 2 more preliminary WIP pages for the other 2 sections I’m planning to create on the site over the next few years, a Resident Evil Series tribute page and a Wonder Boy Monster World Series tribute page. A few times over the last couple of years I’ve wanted to get started on adding tributes but because the pages weren’t setup I deemed it too much work time I should be spending on continuing work on the Civilization section, so it feels to good to have finally laid the foundation for me easily adding tributes to them in the future. I’ve hinted at these new sections over the last few years but I guess you can consider this an official announcement that these new game series sections will be coming to Blake’s Sanctum haha!

And lastly once again because of nearly all my free time going into the Civilization work not much has happened over on the Blake’s Sanctum Youtube channel this year. In fact I think I’ve only released one video this year which is terrible lol, I’m going to start getting “are you dead?” comments on my channel again at this rate lol! I’ve actually filmed a whole bunch of videos from LAN parties and my own gaming sessions however because of all the Civ video work I keep delaying them. So I’ll work to remedy that and get some of these other gaming videos out there in Feb/March after my holiday. Then once I start releasing the big Civ2 videos the channel will really come to life again as I’ve got so much content in the pipeline (literally gigs of unreleased recordings I’ve got backed up on like 3 portable hard drives cause I’m scared of losing it all lol). Anyway despite my inactivity the channel finally hit the big 1000 subscribers earlier in the year and nearly 200 more wonderful people have subbed me since. Sadly because my total public watch hours time is still below 4,000 I still can’t re-monetize the channel which is annoying but hopefully once I push out all the content that’ll change things! However in the end it’s not the end of the world as I don’t create videos to make money, I create them to share my love of great gaming/modding content with fellow fans!

Well I think that’s enough rambling for this year. Thank you everyone who has supported my site over the years. Hope you all had a lovely Christmas and let’s knock down some retro gaming goals in 2023! đŸ™‚

PS – Oh and I haven’t done a list of site changes since 2018 so here’s a new one below covering everything I’ve done since then…

Final Fantasy 16 Trailers

Many years ago I posted about Final Fantasy 15’s trailers & gameplay videos and pooled together many videos of it’s amazing world over the years that followed. A post that to this day I still revisit and enjoy watching the vids as I still don’t have a rig that can play FF15 would you believe haha! Well now that Final Fantasy 16 is coming out soon I figured I may as well start pooling together a list here of it’s trailers too! As expected it’s graphics looking amazing. It’s huge world of different kingdoms with huge castles has a bit of Game of Thrones feel to it (see 2nd vid) and I look forward to seeing more of it’s world as the trailers mostly show combat. For me it’s more the exploring of a huge fantasy world that excites and so I’m eagerly awaiting the gameplay videos that will start appearing in the months to come! And yes eventually after this whole Civilization series saga I’ve been stuck in the last few years I’ll get that big Final Fantasy tribute page built at Blake’s Sanctum too covering my slow progression through the series heh.

The rise of the 2D pixel art in 3D hybrid games (The Last Night, Songs of Conquest, & Octopath Traveller)

Over the last decade we’ve seen a resurgence of indie point & click adventures games that mix low res VGA like pixel art graphics with modern coloured lighting effects (which perhaps I’ll do a separate post on some time) however in more recent years I’ve started to notice this fascinating new genre emerging where 2D pixel art is placed in 3D environments with freaky modern lighting, texture & particle effects combined with ‘camera tricks’ such as forced perspective, zooming and side to side scrolling creating a powerful 3D parallax scrolling effect (using a almost fixed angle camera otherwise from the side they’d look like pieces of paper moving around lol) leading to some utterly awesome retro but not retro looking games. Let me know if you’ve found more games out there like these 3 using these retro/modern hybrid tricks!

One of the first to really catch people’s attention was the trailer for The Last Night, a cyberpunk Flashback like platformer game that looks truly amazing! Sadly it still hasn’t been released yet due to some controversies and finance issues but apparently it’s still alive in 2022 so fingers crossed it gets over the line one day!

I’ve already posted about this one previously but I’m super excited about the new Heroes of Might & Magic style fantasy turn based strategy game called Songs of Conquest that looks utterly awesome too! They’ve gone into early access and all the feedback is sounding really good so far.

New Final Fantasy 1-6 2D Remakes (Yes! FF3 finally gets a 2D remake!!)

Square Enix have announced at E3 2021 that ALL the classic 2D Final Fantasy games from 1-6 are getting pixel perfect remasters! This is amazing news I’ve been waiting 20 friggin years for this as Final Fantasy 3 NEVER got a 2D remake. As someone who collected the FF Origins remakes on Playstation 1 (ported from Wonderswan) along with the Anthology releases of FF4-5 and the awesome FF6 re-release, I was devo that FF3 was not included and never made it to the PS1 due to the Wonderswan FF3 remake being cancelled. When they announced the 3D remake of FF3 years later I was like noooooo, that’s too darn different, this doesn’t fix the gap!! Several fans announced 2D remakes of FF3 over the years but they never got far. However now finally this big gap in the classic series will be filled and all the classic 2D games will get a makeover to the same level of ability and quality in each. Plus modders have been doing amazing stuff with squares retro steam releases so it’ll fascinating to see what they do with these (eg insert PS1 cutscenes?). Sadly no screenshots or gameplay footage yet, just this little teaser!

EDIT: We’ve finally got some screenshots from a video presentation! Oh man this looks good, some of the upgraded backgrounds look epic! Feels so good to see FF3 getting the same treatment too! https://twitter.com/Wario64/status/1409711897364946948

Awesome New Intellivision Indie / Homebrew Games In 2019 (Defender of the Crown, Castlevania, Price of Persia, Final Fantasy, Wonder Boy)

I miss my old Intellivision. I was originally sent this late 1970s console in the late 1980s by my absent father. By that time most people were rocking Commodore 64s, Nintendos and Sega Master Systems so the Intellivision was already looking pretty darn dated but we had no money so it was going to be a while before I could get one of those consoles so I fully embraced the gift I was given. The Intellivision came with the voice addon and a HUGE box of games. There must have easily been 50 of them! Favourites definitely included B-17 Bomber, Tron Deadly Discs, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, White Water, Dracula, River Run, Skiing, Baseball, and Truckin. I always tried to figure out Utopia but my copy was missing the manual which is such a shame as it could have been my first addictive strategy game experience. There were so many others in the collection I’ve forgotten or I just couldn’t figure out due to missing manuals like Sub Hunt and Ice Trek etc..

In the decades since I’ve seen there were some pretty awesome games sadly not in the collection I was given such as the awesome looking Tower of Doom RPG, Thunder Castle, Swords and Serpents, Pole Position, River Raid, Dreadnought Factor, Chip Shot Super Pro Golf (gorgeous graphics), Auto Racing, the Dungeons & Dragons sequels, and who know how many more I missed lol.

Recently the Intellivision company (which came back from the dead) dug out one of their old archived commercials. Watching it is like opening a time capsule!

The company has been very active lately since as most people know now there’s a new Intellivision console on the way now called the Amico which will contain many of the popular classic Intellivision games, along with modern remakes of some of them and hopefully some of the amazing indie games out there. As like with many retro gaming consoles these days there a healthy indie homebrew Intellivision gaming scene creating some AMAZING games that looked WAY better than any of the original games due to absolutely pushing the console to its limits. Some are conversions of popular 80s games on other rival consoles like the Atari, C64, and even the Amiga which have to be seen to be believed. Here are some of the ones have have blown me away!
EDIT: I’ve added project thread links for each of them where you’ll find downloads (not always in the first post) or store links.
EDIT2: A few years on there’s been some even more amazing ports like friggin Super Mario, Megaman & Shadow of the Beast! I cover them in a new post HERE !

Bitmap Books To Print C-RPG Book

This is great news! Bitmap Books those awesome guys behind the amazing video game art books for Nintendo, SEGA, C64 & Amiga etc have teamed up with the guys behind the excellent CRPG Book – A Guide to Computer Role Playing Games that I posted about earlier this year.

I’ve actually already printed out my own copy and have been slowly reading it over the last month (it’s huge!) and it has introduced me to so many great classic RPGs I didn’t know about. You’ll find all the favourites in there such as Elder Scrolls, Might & Magic, Final Fantasy, Quest for Glory and Starflight just to name a mere few. I absolutely love how it covers what the best version is to get (eg between PC, C64, Amiga, Sega & Nintendo etc) and what the best fan mods are for many of the games.

I also recently ordered Bitmap’s other products such as the NES, SNES, Master System and Art of Point & Click Adventure books. What’s arrived so far has blown me away. I love the 3D lenticular slipcase covers! (eg turn the book and Mario will jump & coins will spin). So I think I’m going to have to get this new book too haha. Fingers crossed they do a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) book soon too as thats my real retro console love!

Massive Free Book About History Of PC RPGs Is Out!

This is so cool guys. If you grew up playing RPGs on pc and even on consoles then you’ll love this book!

I love how they even have breakdowns of the graphical differences between different computer/console releases of some of the classic (eg Defender of the Crown and Might & Magic 2) as I’ve done that research myself plenty of times trying to find the best version made of a favourite classic.

Nearly all the favourites I grew up playing like Quest For Glory, Might & Magic, Final Fantasy, and Starflight are here. Also some great modern tributes to the indie scene as they even included the QFG fan game Heroine’s Quest!

You can download the book pdf for free from Kotaku here:

Final Fantasy 15 Trailers

Woot! 16,000 visitors to Blake’s Sanctum now! đŸ™‚

Hey everyone! Regular visitors might be thinking “hey he didn’t do his usual anual tradition of adding 3 new sections to the site in 2015?” lol. Well technically the 2014 updates too so long that they bled into 2015 anyway, but the main reason is that I’ve spent the last 9 months working on 2 very special projects. They will lead into new sections on the website and then I’ll get back to gaming will will lead to more new sections later this year.

In the meantime I’ve got some Final Fantasy news. I’ve recently been watching all the up and coming Final Fantasy 15 gameplay trailers out there and have been just blown away. They’ve really taken a page out of Elder Scrolls and created a giant detailed realistic world filled with incredible creatures living in the lakes, forests & mountains! I also like the design direction with a sort of alternative modern day world with cities and cars being invaded by an army of futuristic Templar knights & crusaders.

Check out the trailer and gameplay videos below:

MASSIVE SITE UPDATE (BACKDATED NEWS – 15/05/2012)

BACKDATED NEWS!! – 15/05/2012

HUGE SITE UPDATE IN PROGRESS! Expandable fullscreen 720p backgrounds, frame fixes for Chrome & Safari, animating intro pages, all screenshots replaced with higher quality versions as well as compact thumbnail versions for quick page loading on mobile devices.

Have also created a Other News section (with a Tron Legacy theme) to announce various bits of awesome news relating to topics on this site & things I enjoy (gaming, fantasy, science fiction etc).

And finally I’ve created a preliminary Final Fantasy section and worked a little more on the preliminary Elder Scrolls Series section with some pictures & music.
