I just saw this new dark Transylvanian vampire HoMM like game called Immortal Realms: Vampire Wars for PC, PS4, Xbox, & Switch in one of my recent PC Gamer mags. In their preview they talked about it’s closeness in gameplay to Heroes of Might & Magic and gothic art style to Disciples. I also notice it has a Eador & AoW-Planetfall like territory/province system, a research system (called legacy), and it looks like most of the game’s mechanics (empire, heroes, spells etc) revolve around an interesting card deck system and all the cards have these cool animations. Looks like there’s no gorgeous HoMM style city screen where you build buildings but in the main map view you can develop provinces with some interesting building upgrades.
I just checked and the game got released a couple of weeks ago on Steam & GoG. Metacritic score looks pretty good at 71%, steam score is not as good although most of the negative reviews point to bugs and AI issues that will hopefully be sorted in patches (Kalypso shouldn’t pull the plug on them as there’s console releases coming so they’ll wanna iron out all the bugs). No multiplayer which doesn’t bother me but I know it might bother others so thought I’d mention it.
Here’s an old preview video of it.. I love that foggy night map shown around the 2min mark. I remember preview videos of HoMM5 had undead foggy dark night time maps that excited me but the final game just had the usual not so foggy day time or dusk undead maps. I can also see myself spending ages just gawking at all the card animations instead of playing the game haha.
OMG just when you think you’ve seen everything the amazing retro gaming dev community amazes us all again! These super talented guys are making a Resident Evil 1 ‘Demake’ for SEGA Genesis/Mega drive! Another one of my backburner projects is working on a Resident Evil section for my website as I love the series and there’s so much amazing fan content out there. This fan project really takes the cake though!
08/09/2020 EDIT: New VHS themed gameplay. So good!
Recent test demo that looks insane!
My beloved 16yr old cat Morpheus passed away last night and I am broken.. and truly alone now.
By the time i got to the vet he was in a bad way but I got to say goodbye before they put him to sleep. I hope he heard me and felt the strokes & pats.
This was my last video of him the night before I took him to the vet. One of our final ‘conversations’ as he loved his back pats and kiss noises and would meow appreciation. He was super friendly, loving and gentle for a cat, even cat haters liked him when they met him lol, as he could win anyone over.
He ‘supervised’ the rebirth of Blake’s Sanctum and the creation of this blog and every video on the youtube channel right back to the first. You can even see my next video series being made in the background of this video. It will be the last one to have the Morph ‘seal of approval’ lol.
Farewell my little buddy, you were everything to me, I’ll never forget you. 😭😭
Recently posted the great news about Implodes Master of Magic HD Multiplayer remake getting a new release (with functioning AIs) well recently there’s been more awesome Master of Magic related news that I forgot to post here (shame on me I know lol). Seravy has started semi-public alpha testing of his new Caster of Magic 2 sequel game! This is not another mod of MoM and is actually a rebuild from the ground up!
Seravy showed me a private screenshot of an older build earlier this year and have been super excited about this going public due to it being a total rebuild of the MoM engine allowing him to have far more control over things so he can do the sort of things he couldn’t with assembly hacks of the original MoM in CoM1 (eg fight more than 4 players). Sadly he has no interest in increasing the viewing resolution to modern ones (like Implode has done) though.. but if he releases the source code one day others could do that in a mod!
Here’s his thread about CoM2 if people are interested in playtesting and want more info (you have to msg him to get a copy as it’s not a true public free for all test):
And here’s a video he made for the announcement (You may need to fast forward the intro as I think he needs to buy a Microphone haha):
Now this is super cool! I used to love playing X-Wing and Tie Fighter collectors editions back in the day. However sadly by the late 90s I’d stopped playing these kinds of games so I didn’t get to experience the joys of the 1998 Windows remakes, X-Wing Vs Tie Fighter, and the final X-Wing Alliance sequels. However I always planned to haha.
I recently noticed they’re all on steam and there’s some good fan patches out there for them so I guess I’ve got no excuse now lol. However the most impressive fan project I’ve found is this one! It massively converts the ancient late 90s X-Wing Alliance engine to support better textures, shaders and lighting effects and what a difference it makes. Just amazing!
The project is already released and is still being improved upon in 2020. Check out this recent video they did! Wowzer!!
Any of my followers tried this new but retroish 4X Master Of Orion 2 like game? If so was it good? Was it stable? Apparently the indie team behind it consists of only 2 people haha! It looks pretty awesome so am thinking about trying it out now that it’s finally on sale (it’s normally pretty pricey lol).
Have been watching this video series of it and am just blown away! Think I’m gonna have to hit that buy button lol!
Here’s some screenshots:
Big news today! We’ve got a new official Alex Kidd remake on the way!! I’ve posted in the past about how I grew up playing Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Wonder boy 2 in Monster Land and how I’m huge fan of any official and fan projects relating to them such as the two Alex Kidd Miracle World fan sequels that work on your Sega Master system. I hope to make big Alex Kidd and Wonder Boy tribute pages on my website Blake’s Sanctum one day as it’s great to see these old franchises receiving new love after decades of nothing!
For the last few years I’ve been following a Spanish fellow on twitter making a Alex Kidd remake fan project for years, he’s also doing a Wonder Boy fan game called Value Boy too. I looked at the trailer for this new Alex Kidd remake and thought “hmm this looks very familiar.. have they ripped him off??” only to discover that it IS his game lol! He must have presented his work to Sega and they loved it so much that they backed him instead of giving him a C&D! Well done Sega! I bet Nintendo wouldn’t have done that lol! However I suspect this great news will also mean the end of his Value Boy project though sadly!
Regular visitors to my blog may have seen on my What Is Blake Playing Right NOW? page that I’ve been quite busy with Cilization 2 modding as part of the HUGE new WIP Civilization section and youtube series I’ve been working on for ages.
The biggest project of them all is a Heroes of Might & Magic 2 total conversion mod and scenario for the great classic game Sid Meier’s Civilization II MGE created by Metropolis and me! Inspired by Tom2050’s amazing HoMM3 mod for Civ3 we hope to create the most HoMM2 like experience within the limitations of the old Civ2 engine.
We’ve created a ModDB page for the project with fun dev diaries covering stages of development. Figured I’d post each of them here too! Here’s the next three! 🙂
Dev Diaries 1-3 were posted HERE
HUGE fourth dev diary is up! This time we look at changing Civ2’s throne room with a HoMM2 castle jigsaw while completely replacing the title screen plus intro, diplomacy herald and wonder videos with cool HoMM2 content.
Dev Diary 04 – New Throne Room, Intro, Dip & Wonder Videos For The Civ2 Heroes Of Might & Magic 2 Mod:
Fifth dev diary is up! This time we look at adding new HoMM2 themed victory and death sequences plus custom city screen backgrounds.
Dev Diary 05 – Creating Victory/Death & City Backgrounds For The Civ2 Heroes Of Might & Magic 2 Mod:
Sixth dev diary is up! This time we answer fan demands to show units while also showing off all city buildings and some small touch-ups to the city sky view.
Dev Diary 06 – Heroes, Units & City Buildings In The Civ2 Heroes Of Might & Magic 2 Mod:
WOAH!!! More great news for us Master of Magic fans as Implode has returned from his self imposed exile (think kungfu movie where the bad guy bests the good guy so the good guy climbs up a mountain and learns better kungfu with some old guy with a grey beard who never speaks and then the good guy comes back and kicks the bad guys ass lol) and released a new version of his HD Multiplayer remake of Master of Magic with for the first time FUNCTIONING AI!! This is the moment so many have been waiting for.. lets try it and give him some feedback!
Edit: Implode has done yet another release after teaching the AI to build roads! More details HERE !
Old Tour video:
Hey guys.. if any of you are or used to be members of the various old Civ forum communities (eg CivFinatics)and you tried Drift’s Master of Magic inspired Master of Myrror II & Master of Arcanus final beta sequel mods for Civilization 3 and you think you may still have the files somewhere on some old hard drive PLEASE LET ME KNOW as these great old MoM related mods may be lost forever! 😦
(Note: Drift’s original Master of Myrror I mod has been safely backed up, it’s just the sequels missing)
My attempts to rescue the mods in Drift’s original Master of Myrror II & Master of Arcanus final betas thread is here:
EDIT: WE’VE GOT THEM!!!!
Drift’s Master of Myrror II sequel & Master of Arcanus final betas have been saved!!! 🙂 Massive thank you to PaGe at the German civforum.de forums! He just might have been the last person on the planet with these files lol!
Not anymore though as I’ve repacked the files in 7zip, added new documentation, and used the large file upload access the admins at CivFinatics kindly gave me last year to upload them & I’ve also stuck a copy of them over at ModDB too! Hopefully we never have to worry about them disappearing again!
