Looks like it’s not just Tempest Rising trying to fill the retro ‘Command & Conquer and Red Alert like’ void. There’s an indie game project called Global Conflagration that looks rather promising too! From the outside I’d say it probably has more of a C&C Generals feel to it with a bit of Red Alert thrown in too. They recently did a public demo period leading to lots of feedback that will keep them busy for a while but apparently they plan to do an early access release later this year. Dunno about that name lol, but it looks pretty cool!
Civfanatics & I recently celebrated the Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri 25th Anniversary at CivFanatics talking about some of the amazing Alpha Centauri fan projects such as the very realistic fan film, the new fan game remake, some of the best fan patches out there, and of course where you could get the game from which for some strange reason was only Good Old Games and not Steam.
I posted a few months ago about the awesome looking Command & Conquer and Red Alert like game from 3D Realms called Tempest Rising on the way and I’ve been eagerly following it’s updates ever since as it’s looking very cool! I figured I’d do a new post about these as there’s a free playable demo out temporarily on steam at the moment and a new trailer too! They’ve also been releasing some awesome music track teasers that are very Frank Klepacki and Red Alert inspired along with more cool screenshots and concept art that I’ll stick below too!
When I made my previous post I failed to notice the Gamescon 2022 gameplay footage that shows the awesome C&C like briefing intro and outro sequences for missions using very nice graphics that really set the mood.
Command & Conquer and Red Alert Series fans have been waiting a long time for a new game to come from EA. A lot of us hoped the recent remasters would lead to more remasters of 2nd generation C&C games or new sequels but in the years since we’ve heard nothing from EA still.
However thankfully those retro loving guys at 3D Realms have decided to dip their toes into the RTS genre (normally they do FPS games!) and create a new game called Tempest Rising that’s very VERY Command & Conquer and Red Alert looking but with modern graphics and lighting effects and my word does it look good! Alternative war history? Check! Strange alien resource spreading all over the earth? Check! Allied global defense forces trying to keep the peace? Check! Eastern European faction obsessed with obtaining god like powers from the alien resource? Check! Single player campaigns separated by badass cutscenes? Check! Sick Frank Klepacki style synth rock album? Check! This is the new C&C and RA like game we’ve been waiting for!
I don’t know about you guys but when I was a young man in the late 90s and early 2000s I loved meeting up with 3 or 4 mates, getting some booze & bad take away food, bringing our computers over and playing multiplayer games like Command & Conquer, Unreal Tournament, Counterstrike, and Civilization just to name a few. We nicknamed them ‘netbashes’ (although most of the world call them LAN parties) and had many over those years but sadly for whatever reason (grew up, got jobs, got girlfriends etc) we stopped doing them after 2001ish.
Well in 2017 we decided to bring back the netbash (possibly due to an early midlife crisis haha) and relive our youth playing some of these great old games. Thanks to the fan gaming and modding community its easier than ever to play some of these classic games on modern machines. OpenRA in particular is just an utterly brilliant and addictive way to relive C&C and Dune gaming. Since I already had a website and youtube channel devoted to retro gaming and mods I decided to start filming some of our netbash games to improve the content. Below are some of the videos of these great fan remakes and mods of great classic games!
If you haven’t seen my earlier Netbash posts then you can find them HERE, HERE and HERE
2019-2020 Netbash’s Well once again I’m super late with this post that I’ve combined lots of LAN parties over 2 years into one post as I no longer remember how many Netbashes we had and what naughty foods we ate haha!
We had number of great netbashes in 2019 and 2020 with Mick , James & myself along with David and Bryan making appearances. New games were tested such as the awesome Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion mod scene (Star Trek Armada 3 and Halo Sins of the Prophets) and Age of Empires 3 and we also had some more OpenRA games testing awesome 3rd party mods like Classic Dune 2, Red Alert 1 Doom horror survival map Purgatory, Red Alert 2 Romanov’s Vengeance resulting in a number of cool videos filmed! Here they are below! 2019 Bashes naughty meals of choice: Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill, Nordburger, and Lawash Bakery (Afgan food)! 2020 Bashes naughty meals of choice: NONE! We were stuck in lockdown and had to play remotely over the internet!
OpenRA C&C Red Alert 1 Survival Horror Map Purgatory (4 Players vs DOOM MONSTERS)
OpenRA C&C Red Alert 2 Romanov’s Vengeance Mod Allied Multiplayer (4 Players vs 4 AIs)
. Time to continue posting about my latest project I’ve been hinting at in previous Civilization posts! All those skills I’ve learned making the soon to be released Civilization 2 Heroes of Might & Magic 2 and Command & Conquer Africa scenarios are now being put into the hardest scenario I have ever attempted! I’m pushing even further into the Command & Conquer and Red Alert universe and creating a big Civilization 2 Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario where you’ll be battling it out in city streets between huge sky scrapers.. and yes I know I’m crazy as that’s totally something the Civ2 engine wasn’t built for haha! And I also know this is 20 years too late for anyone to care about it lol!
I’ve created a ModDB page for the project with dev diaries covering stages of development. Figured I’d post them here too, so here’s the next three dev diaries on the Civilization 2Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario. Dev diaries 1-3 were posted HERE
. Well I guess it’s finally time to show my next project I’ve been hinting at in previous Civilization posts! All those skills I’ve learned making the soon to be released Civilization 2 Heroes of Might & Magic 2 and Command & Conquer Africa scenarios are now being put into the hardest scenario I have ever attempted! I’m pushing even further into the Command & Conquer and Red Alert universe and creating a big Civilization 2 Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario where you’ll be battling it out in city streets between huge sky scrapers.. and yes I know I’m crazy as that’s totally something the Civ2 engine wasn’t built for haha! . After months working on a huge Heroes of Might & Magic 2 Civ2 scenarioI decided to turn my attention over to one of my other favourite franchises for some more fun Civ2 scenarios, the Command & Conquer and Red Alert universe! I started coming up with some pretty crazy ideas for huge Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario where you’ll be battling it out in city streets between huge sky scrapers however despite learning a lot from working on the HoMM2 scenario I wasn’t quite game enough to start that just yet. I’d also been thinking about a dark and moody scenario set in the C&C Tiberium universe and noticed that a fellow named Wonx2150 had already made a scenario in that universe but just hadn’t really done any proper graphics for it so I decided to take the easier route and remaster his scenario first to build up more experience before taking on the big Red Alert 2 scenario.
I’ve created a ModDB page for this project with dev diaries covering stages of development. Figured I’d post them here too so here’s the first two! Stay tuned for dev diaries for the Red Alert 2 scenario here in the future too! EDIT: Red Alert 2 scenario dev diaries now posted HERE
This is a really well made and put together documentary of the history of the Command & Conquer and Red Alert Series. I learned a lot as there were a number of failed projects I didn’t know about. This doco covers the highs and the lows, the successes and failures while showing lots of a great footage. If you’re a C&C fan I highly recommend you check it out!
(Note: it was made in 2017 so they didn’t know about the current remasters being made)
