Netbash 2019-2020! Retro Gaming Multiplayer LAN Party Videos

Hey everyone 🙂

I don’t know about you guys but when I was a young man in the late 90s and early 2000s I loved meeting up with 3 or 4 mates, getting some booze & bad take away food, bringing our computers over and playing multiplayer games like Command & Conquer, Unreal Tournament, Counterstrike, and Civilization just to name a few. We nicknamed them ‘netbashes’ (although most of the world call them LAN parties) and had many over those years but sadly for whatever reason (grew up, got jobs, got girlfriends etc) we stopped doing them after 2001ish.

Well in 2017 we decided to bring back the netbash (possibly due to an early midlife crisis haha) and relive our youth playing some of these great old games. Thanks to the fan gaming and modding community its easier than ever to play some of these classic games on modern machines. OpenRA in particular is just an utterly brilliant and addictive way to relive C&C and Dune gaming. Since I already had a website and youtube channel devoted to retro gaming and mods I decided to start filming some of our netbash games to improve the content. Below are some of the videos of these great fan remakes and mods of great classic games!

If you haven’t seen my earlier Netbash posts then you can find them HERE, HERE and HERE

2019-2020 Netbash’s
Well once again I’m super late with this post that I’ve combined lots of LAN parties over 2 years into one post as I no longer remember how many Netbashes we had and what naughty foods we ate haha!

We had number of great netbashes in 2019 and 2020 with Mick , James & myself along with David and Bryan making appearances. New games were tested such as the awesome Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion mod scene (Star Trek Armada 3 and Halo Sins of the Prophets) and Age of Empires 3 and we also had some more OpenRA games testing awesome 3rd party mods like Classic Dune 2, Red Alert 1 Doom horror survival map Purgatory, Red Alert 2 Romanov’s Vengeance resulting in a number of cool videos filmed! Here they are below!
2019 Bashes naughty meals of choice: Salsa’s Fresh Mex Grill, Nordburger, and Lawash Bakery (Afgan food)!
2020 Bashes naughty meals of choice: NONE! We were stuck in lockdown and had to play remotely over the internet!

Civilization 2: Red Alert 2 Siege of New York Mod – Dev Diaries 4-6

Regular visitors to my blog may have seen on my What Is Blake Playing Right NOW? page that I’ve been quite busy with Cilization 2 modding as part of the HUGE new WIP Civilization section and youtube series I’ve been working on for ages.

.
Time to continue posting about my latest project I’ve been hinting at in previous Civilization posts! All those skills I’ve learned making the soon to be released Civilization 2 Heroes of Might & Magic 2 and Command & Conquer Africa scenarios are now being put into the hardest scenario I have ever attempted! I’m pushing even further into the Command & Conquer and Red Alert universe and creating a big Civilization 2 Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario where you’ll be battling it out in city streets between huge sky scrapers.. and yes I know I’m crazy as that’s totally something the Civ2 engine wasn’t built for haha! And I also know this is 20 years too late for anyone to care about it lol!

I’ve created a ModDB page for the project with dev diaries covering stages of development. Figured I’d post them here too, so here’s the next three dev diaries on the Civilization 2 Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario.

Dev diaries 1-3 were posted HERE

In this fourth dev diary we hit our stride and finish off all building types – big ones, little ones, and the biiiig difficult 3×3 super skyscrapers.

In this fifth dev diary we finally finished all city buildings and base buildings allowing us to finalise the design of the map.

In this sixth dev diary we’re finally in the home stretch as the title loading screen plus all units, technologies, base improvements are completed.

Well I guess it’s finally time to show my next project I’ve been hinting at in previous Civilization posts! EDIT: Dev diaries 4-6 now posted HERE

Disclaimer: Hopefully the final product will be waaaaay better than all these WIP test shots but I gotta start somewhere haha.

In this first dev diary we look at experimenting with Civ2’s terrain limits & using some sneaky tricks to begin creating a Red Alert 2 style city map with Liberty island, bridges and buildings.

In the second dev diary we look at adding bigger buildings, Command centers with walls, and lots of other nice decoration trying to push Civ2’s terrain limits.

In the third dev diary we look at adding special fun buildings like the McBurger Kong and Petrol Station, while overhauling all previously made small buildings to much better quality.

Civilization 2: Command & Conquer Mod – Dev Diaries 1-2

Regular visitors to my blog may have seen on my What Is Blake Playing Right NOW? page that I’ve been quite busy with Cilization 2 modding as part of the HUGE new WIP Civilization section and youtube series I’ve been working on for ages.

After months working on a huge Heroes of Might & Magic 2 Civ2 scenario I decided to turn my attention over to one of my other favourite franchises for some more fun Civ2 scenarios, the Command & Conquer and Red Alert universe! I started coming up with some pretty crazy ideas for huge Red Alert 2 Siege of New York scenario where you’ll be battling it out in city streets between huge sky scrapers however despite learning a lot from working on the HoMM2 scenario I wasn’t quite game enough to start that just yet. I’d also been thinking about a dark and moody scenario set in the C&C Tiberium universe and noticed that a fellow named Wonx2150 had already made a scenario in that universe but just hadn’t really done any proper graphics for it so I decided to take the easier route and remaster his scenario first to build up more experience before taking on the big Red Alert 2 scenario.

I’ve created a ModDB page for this project with dev diaries covering stages of development. Figured I’d post them here too so here’s the first two! Stay tuned for dev diaries for the Red Alert 2 scenario here in the future too! EDIT: Red Alert 2 scenario dev diaries now posted HERE

In this first dev diary I look at changing Civ2’s terrain and cities to look like C&C2 as well as importing some cool new units.

In the second dev diary I ask for some fan input and finish off importing all the new C&C unit graphics.

History of Command and Conquer/Red Alert Documentary

This is a really well made and put together documentary of the history of the Command & Conquer and Red Alert Series. I learned a lot as there were a number of failed projects I didn’t know about. This doco covers the highs and the lows, the successes and failures while showing lots of a great footage. If you’re a C&C fan I highly recommend you check it out!

(Note: it was made in 2017 so they didn’t know about the current remasters being made)

Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun Fan Addon: Twisted Insurrection

Oh my god! How did I not know about this!!! For the last decade (and is still being worked on even now) there has been an amazing huge fan made total conversion addon to Command & Conquer Tiberian Sun called Twisted Insurrection!

This stand alone addon takes place in an alternate timeline where NOD won the original C&C1 Tiberian Dawn story taking control of GDI’s Iron cannon and conquering the world! Twisted Insurrection adds a huge new 50+ mission campaign, completely overhauled GDI & NOD units and buildings, a new third faction called GloboTech, new terrain and tiberian types, huge city maps (RA2 style), underground/inside base building infiltration maps (RA1 style), amazing brand new cutscene videos, and a huge new soundtrack of 70+ songs including one from original C&C & Red Alert composer Frank Klepacki! And if all that isn’t enough they’re now working on adding the entire original Command & Conquer 1 Tiberian Dawn campaign game into the Tiberian Sun engine with enhanced/overhauled versions of the original buildings and units!

MIND BLOWN!!!

My Favourite Free / Open Source HD Fan Remakes / Sequels / Spin Offs Of Great Classic 90s Games

These days there’s nothing I love more than finding a free fan made remake, sequel or spin off of one of my favourite 90s games. Especially the ones that retain the original graphics but allow for modern HD resolutions while adding gameplay improvements we wished the original had. Most of these projects are alive and well but could really use our support! Here are some of my favourites..

OpenRA
An amazing open source multiplayer remake of the 90s Command & Conquer and Red Alert engine. Supports C&C1, Red Alert 1, Dune 2000, C&C2 Tiberian Sun along with Red Alert 2 and Dune 2 Classic via 3rd party addons.
Requirements: Fully playable. Only needs original C&C CDs if you want videos & some special addon content
Home Page

FreeCiv
A brilliant open source spin off of the Civilization series. Most similar to Civ2 but also has a nice top down Civ1 mode too. Can support up to 126 AI or human players and has a huge range of user generated content such as maps, mods and graphics.
Requirements: None!
Home Page

Master of Magic IME
Implodes Multiplayer Edition is the classic Master of Magic remake we’ve all been waiting for. We just need him to finish it lol! HD resolutions, multiplayer (single player is still there too!), ginormous mirror worlds and up to 13 players (all Wizards!!) in one game await you!
Requirements: None! But is still in Alpha.
Sourceforge Page

OpenIG
An utterly incredible open source remake of the classic 4X space strategy game Imperium Galactica. The original games creators were so impressed they gave them a contract allowing them to legally work on the remake. HD resolutions, better unit controls, sandbox galaxy mode with playable aliens, multiplayer, building upgrades, and a video upscaler are just some of the amazing improvements.
Requirements: None!

Netbash 3 – August 2017
It took us a few months to find another weekend to get the group together but we finally got there. James also invited his old mate Mick around to join him, Dave & I allowing us to play our first 4 player match! We seemed to be having an off day as we lost the first few matches of OpenRa C&C1 and kept having to drop the AI count lol. Finally we prevailed lol. Then after Mick had to leave I asked the guys to have a go at playing a Dune 2 HD Legacy match. These games went even worse haha. We lost so many games that by the time we did win a match I wasn’t recording anymore lol! Doh! James’s partner Jane cooked us a nice roast which I then promptly vomited all over her floor due to accidentally eating it to quickly. I’m not proud lol.
We also played an OpenRA Red Alert 1 naval battle map (as I realised I hadn’t done a RA1 video yet) and then a fun OpenRA C&C2 map that has you battling over snow covered bridges. We’d had a crazy match on the map at bash 2 so I was determined to get a video of it this time!
Bash 3 naughty meal of choice: Jane’s Roast Beef!
