These days there’s nothing I love more than finding a free fan made remake, sequel or spin off of one of my favourite 90s games. Especially the ones that retain the original graphics but allow for modern HD resolutions while adding gameplay improvements we wished the original had. Most of these projects are alive and well but could really use our support! Here are some of my favourites..
An amazing open source multiplayer remake of the 90s Command & Conquer and Red Alert engine. Supports C&C1, Red Alert 1, Dune 2000, C&C2 Tiberian Sun along with Red Alert 2 and Dune 2 Classic via 3rd party addons.
Requirements: Fully playable. Only needs original C&C CDs if you want videos & some special addon content
A brilliant open source spin off of the Civilization series. Most similar to Civ2 but also has a nice top down Civ1 mode too. Can support up to 126 AI or human players and has a huge range of user generated content such as maps, mods and graphics.
Master of Magic IME
Implodes Multiplayer Edition is the classic Master of Magic remake we’ve all been waiting for. We just need him to finish it lol! HD resolutions, multiplayer (single player is still there too!), ginormous mirror worlds and up to 13 players (all Wizards!!) in one game await you!
Requirements: None! But is still in Alpha.
An utterly incredible open source remake of the classic 4X space strategy game Imperium Galactica. The original games creators were so impressed they gave them a contract allowing them to legally work on the remake. HD resolutions, better unit controls, sandbox galaxy mode with playable aliens, multiplayer, building upgrades, and a video upscaler are just some of the amazing improvements.
Using the FreeCiv engine another team have created a open source remake of Colonization. Using nice 2.5D isometric graphics it feels like a late 90s sequel in-between Col1 & the 3D Civ4 Col that we never got. Has huge maps, more European nations to play as or against, multiplayer, and a decent range of user generated content such as maps, mods and graphics.
Great open source remake of the classic Transport Tycoon Deluxe strategy game. HD resolutions, bigger maps, and numerous other gameplay improvements await!
Requirements: Fully playable. You’ll need the original CD if you want the original graphics however fans have made their own free graphics packs.
A cool open source spin off to the classic Master of Orion 4X space strategy games. It contains a nice merger of features from all 3 original games (eg sliders from Moo1, graphics style of Moo2 & jumplanes from Moo3) HD resolutions, huge galaxys, and many other features.
Dune 2 Legacy
By far the greatest Dune 2 remake of them all. Great graphical options and HD resolutions, 3 sub houses (Fremen, Sardukar, Mercs), a map editor and loads of skirmish/multiplayer maps. They’ve added the Super Dune 2 Missions with new improved briefings so really the only feature still missing is support for Dune eXtended missions.
Requirements: Original Dune 2 files
Dune 2 Dynasty
A very accurate Dune 2 reconstruction similar to Legacy but it has been neglected for years now and is lacking some of Legacy’s features. However like Legacy it supports HD resolutions, 3 sub houses (Fremen, Sardukar, Mercs) and best of all it supports the brilliant Dune 2 eXtended missions making it currently the only choice if you wish to play eXtended missions in HD with C&C controls. Plus being an accurate reconstruction of the original Dune 2 it does give a more classic Dune 2 like experience than Legacy.
Requirements: Original Dune 2 1.07 (preferably EU Edition) files
Palm Kingdoms 2
An awesome fan game that is a very good Heroes of Might & Magic 2 style reconstruction with features from HoMM3 and other games thrown in too. The races are almost identical to HoMM2 however there is a cool new Viking mythology race added to the game too. These days the game is completely free to download and play. Its creator is making a new Palm Kingdoms 3 game with HoMM5 style alternative unit upgrades which I’m very excited about.
More to come soon!!!
